Abstract: While mentoring between "rookie" and experienced instructors is a powerful tool for professional development, it is often logistically difficult to arrange due to scheduling conflicts and time restraints. However, the use of digital video allows for such a mentoring partnership to occur, regardless of whether instructors can physically attend one another's classes. At McHenry County College, a mentoring relationship has emerged between a third-year adjunct Spanish instructor and a full-time Spanish instructor with over 25 years of experience. The adjunct instructor sets up a digital video camera in the classroom and records her class. The experienced instructor then easily navigates through the digital footage and flags portions of the video with specific comments and suggestions. Over the semester, the adjunct instructor has a series of videos, which demonstrate growth and can be used not only to improve instruction but can also be an invaluable artifact in a professional portfolio.
