Education's DigitalStream Exploiting
Video Soundtracks in the Foreign Language Curriculum (90
min.) Jack Burston, Rochester Institute of Technology Abstract: In task-based pedagogical approaches, computer technology is used as a tool to get a language-based job done. One especially motivating type of facilitative computer usage in the foreign language curriculum is that involving digital video production. In particular, the manipulation of soundtracks from existing video clips lends itself to language production activities at all levels of linguistic proficiency. Using the Movie Maker
digital editing program that comes bundled with Windows-XP, the presenter
will demonstrate a number of ways to exploit video soundtracks for group-based
student tasks. At its simplest, this just requires the muting of a learned
dialog and its redubbing by students. Through more selective editing,
students can be presented with video clips that challenge their imagination
and require them to construct their own scenarios and appropriate soundtracks.
Aside from the obvious benefits of communicative oral production, such
activities also foster listening comprehension as well as writing skills
development. |
