How to Integrate Computers With a Student-Centered Teaching Approach (45 min.)
Thursday, March 25th
4:15 p.m.
Bldg. 46/103

Hoe Kyeung Kim, Defense Language Institute

Abstract: One of the challenges for language teachers in using computers in their classrooms is how to integrate their computer use with a student-centered teaching approach. In spite of diverse applications of computers, language teachers limit their use of computers to instructional tools. Due to this tendency, computers are not widely utilized to support a student-centered teaching approach.

This presentation will explore potential uses of computers in student-centered teaching environments. In language teaching, uses of computers, such as emails, and discussion boards, and the Internet, are expected to increase meaningful interaction among students and native speakers of a target language and easy access to authentic materials. To maximize the benefits of computers, however, language teachers need to utilize computers in ways to empower students in their learning experience. In terms of students’ learning tools, computers in language classrooms need to be utilized as student tools for writing, communicating, and researching.
