Educating the Student in a Digital Mobile Culture (45 min.)
Thursday, March 25, 2004
10:45 a.m.
Bldg. 45/102

Arlene Krebs, CSU, Monterey Bay

Abstract: By 2005 most higher education institutions will deploy wireless access, yet few have explored the dynamics of pedagogical transformation that mobile devices allow. As the demand for a ubiquitous computing and communications environment rockets, higher education faces an array of IT and related pedagogy issues—including research, curriculum models, and best practices for integrating wireless media into courses. Many professors are seeking innovative models that demonstrate how pedagogy is developed, implemented and evaluated.

This session will highlight wireless technologies across the curriculum on campus and in the community. Projects involve student-centered outcomes-based pedagogy, where students engage in collaborative learning and real-time data collection and analysis—in field archaeology, marine sciences, teacher education and foreign languages. Arlene will also discuss the activities and goals of the Wireless Education & Technology Center, established to help advance mobile teaching and learning.
