Abstract: The presentation will cover essential information on recent developments in copyright law and Fair Use guidelines in the digital environment for developers and teachers of online or Web-based language courses, as applied in context of DLI’s Web-based G.L.O.S.S. language teaching Learning Objects. The 1997 “No Electronic Theft” Act, the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the 2002 Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization Act and the Fair Use Guidelines will be explained, along with examples of practical application for using copyrighted texts, photos, audio and video in online curriculum development and in the online teaching environment. Instruction and a hand-out on obtaining permission to use copyrighted materials will be provided, as well as checklists and printed guidelines for the legally allowable fair use of materials without permission.
