Teaching News in a Digital Classroom (45 min.)
Thursday, March 25th
11:30 a.m.
UC 115/116

Patrick Lin, Defense Language Institute

Abstract: News, whether it is in newspaper articles or in TV broadcasts, is a valuable resource for language teaching. News covers various topics that are closely related to peoples daily lives and contains authentic language expressions that students need to learn. However, there are problems in teaching news in a traditional classroom. The news items in textbooks are often outdated since it usually takes many years to develop and publish a textbook. Textbooks are also not interactive. With SMART Board and available Internet technology, news can be taught in a more effective way in a digital classroom. This presentation will first examine the value of news as a resource in language teaching and then demonstrate how to teach current news in a digital classroom. The presenter will share his ideas and experiences with the audience on integrating listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills in the teaching of news with SMART Board.
