From A to Zulu: Developing and Applying a Web-based Language and Culture Instructional Resource (45 min.)
Thursday, March 25th
3:30 p.m.
UC 115/116

John Lynch, UCLA Center for Digital Humanities

Abstract: The Instructional Technology Consultants (graduate students helping professors develop on-line educational resources) at the UCLA Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) will demonstrate an interactive web resource for teaching IsiZulu language and culture, currently under development at UCLA, for adaptation to other languages. In collaboration with Dr. Cherie Mills of Loyola Marymount University Extension (a specialist in distance education), Brian Lin (CDH’s assistant media specialist) and Dr. Lungi Sosibo of UCLA (a professor of IsiZulu language and culture), the ITCs are designing an XML-driven software template that can present both linguistic and cultural material in any digital medium for web delivery, and that someone without programming skills can easily update as the need arises. The underlying framework is built in Flash, but a simple set of menus and commands allows for the addition and connection of digital video, audio, stills, and text, the creation of separate linguistic and cultural lessons, and student self-assessment.
