Motivation in Networked Testing (45 min.) Panayis Panayi, Intercollege Larnaca, Cyprus Abstract: Unlike conventional forms of testing, online networked testing encompasses the element of play and, consequently, appeals to the students. Online testing makes students enjoy it and turn to it for their personal satisfaction, rather than consider it as a chore to be carried out for the purpose of satisfying the teacher and thus achieving a grade. The motivation from this satisfaction has a very beneficial effect on language learning. Competent teachers know that language elements produced in the process of exercises and drills achieve little retention; on the other hand, motivated participation in online testing is much closer to life experience and tends to have a more lasting effect. A detailed analysis of a variety of experiments in such testing indicates a poorer outcome in objective “assessment” of student progress but, at the same time, a clearly visible improvement in communication and in overall language acquisition. |
