Using WIMBA to Design an Online Language Course (45 min.)
Thursday, March 25th
3:30 p.m.
UC Living Room

Fernando Rubio, University of Utah
Olga Bailess, University of Utah

Abstract: This presentation shows a work in progress to design an online course for first-year Spanish. The course uses Blackboard, a course management system, as its main platform. Since the main challenge of online language courses is how to provide students with opportunities to practice their speaking and listening skills, the authors will present a practical way of solving the problem using the Wimba software, a voice enabling system that provides a simple solution to the problem.

The presentation will include a quick introduction to Blackboard and how we are using it to host the course, and a more detailed illustration of how Wimba can be used to design different types of oral activities. Participants will have the opportunity to see a variety of practical examples.
