Bldg. 45/102

Hang Zhang, Defense Language Institute

Abstract: This presentation demonstrates creative use of technology in developing teaching packages based on a variety of videos. It shows how to identify key points of instruction, digitize and segment video clips, and develop appropriate activities that integrate skills and promote collaboration. The goal is to turn passive video-viewing into a more active learning process by introducing vocabulary through context, emphasizing the ability to read gestures and intentions and to function in a variety of situations. Thus helps students build second culture schemata and minimizes cultural gaps. The participants learn to match the levels of the students with appropriate activities using PowerPoint, web technology and video editing tools. The strategy is to provide more comprehension activities, such as jigsaw puzzle and fill-in-blanks when the plot presents challenges to the students while incorporating more productive activities, such as narration, instruction, description, role plays, and cultural discussion, for relatively easier clips.
