Thomas F. Abbott
Institution: California State University Monterey Bay
Lectures in Japanese Area Studies at California State University Monterey
Bay where he has developed courses in Japanese Culture and Civilization,
Pop-Culture, Cinema and The Japanese Mind, Japanese Economic History and
Business and the Japanese-American Experience. His interdisciplinary
background includes economics, psychology, business administration, computer
science and international management studies. He has taught in America
and Japan and served for seventeen years as the Executive Director of PEACE•USA,
a private non-profit multinational educational exchange foundation. He
has consulted with and worked in major U.S. and Japanese high tech firms
including NEC, Apple Computer and Mitsubishi Steel. He has developed a multimedia
simulation for Business Japanese at The University of Texas at Austin.
Since 1993 he has been involved in teacher training and professional development
for foreign language teachers. His publications have focused on the application
of computers to language instruction. In addition to teaching, he is currently
serving as an executive member of the California Japanese Framework Project
Steering Committee and as Technology Director for the Monterey Bay Foreign
Language Project.

Lee Abraham

Lee B. Abraham is Assistant Professor of Spanish in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova University where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in applied linguistics, teaching methodology, and instructional technologies. Professor Abraham also serves as the coordinator of beginning and intermediate-level Spanish courses and is the Assistant Software Review Editor of the CALICO (Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium) Journal. Professor Abraham's research focuses on sociocognitive approaches to second language writing, reading, and vocabulary learning with multimedia and the World Wide Web as well as the integration of technologies for second language and cultural learning in classroom L2 learning and in study abroad environments.

Melissa Anderson
Institution: Pepperdine University
Melissa Anderson has worked with a variety of online educational technologies for the past seven years as a director of education technology at both NYU and Pepperdine. In these roles, she was responsible for both the technical management of the system as well as the training and support of faculty, staff and students. Melissa has her MA in Educational Policy and MBA in Management, both from Columbia University. She is currently finishing her doctorate in educational technology at Pepperdine University, with dissertation work focused on collaborative learning. Melissa also is a faculty member in the Masters in Educational Technology program at Pepperdine University, where she teaches two courses- Managing Technology for Change and Team Leadership.

Natalia Antokhin

Natasha Anthony
Natasha Anthony is an Online Instructor of Russian and Online Russian course developer at the University System of Georgia. She is an International Language Lab Director and Adjunct Instructor in Web Design at Hudson Valley Community College. She designs and teaches online and face-to-face faculty development courses on the use of technologies in foreign language teaching at SUNY-Albany and HVCC. Natasha is also a doctoral student in Curriculum and Instruction at SUNY-Albany. Her research covers Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and teacher education.

Timothy Berndt
Tim Berndt is currently the Assistant Dean of Asian School I at the Defense Language Institute. A graduate of the Monterey Institute of International Studies (Chinese-English Translation), Tim has worked in higher education for nearly 20 years. Before becoming Assistant Dean, Tim was a professor of Chinese and later a Language Technology Specialist in Asian School I. From the late 80ís to the mid 90ís, Tim lived in Taiwan, teaching Foreign Language and Literature Department courses and Music Technology classes at Tunghai University. In the evenings and on weekends he also taught Mandarin to expatriates, did freelance translation and interpretation work, and was a talk-show producer and host on local Taichung City radio. After receiving his MA, Tim returned to Taiwan to teach translation and interpretation at Chang Jung University. Since returning to the United States, Tim has also taught numerous translation courses at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
Eva Maria Bill

Eva Maria Bill currently is a Spanish instructor at McHenry County College. She received her Master's degree in Spanish from Case Western Reserve University and completed her Ph.D. coursework with a focus on Spanish literature. She has designed and developed two online Spanish courses and uses technology extensively in her traditional face-to-face Spanish courses. She has presented at various conferences nationwide.

Valerie Braimah holds a Master's Degree in Education Policy from Johns Hopkins University. She is affiliated with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the National Staff Development Council (NSDC), the California Charter School Association (CCSA), and the International Reading Association, and is currently working as an Educational Consultant and Director of Partnership for Insight Education Group, Inc. http://www.insighteducationgroup.com/main.html. In addition to her work as a classroom teacher, she has experience in the areas of staff development and program evaluation. She provides consultation, training, and technical assistance services to teachers, schools, and districts, and published the Service-Learning Leadership Development Training Guide to help educational and community-based organizations build leadership capacity for their service-learning programs. She has led several workshops in "Backward Design", a standard-based process for curriculum design.

She has received grants from the East Windsor Hightstown Foundation for Educational Excellence and NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education. She has been selected to participate at the Suusan J. Epply Storytelling Institute - Princeton University, New Jersey Council for the Humanities Institute - Monmouth University, Teachers as Scholars - Princeton University. Ms. Carlucci worked as a Cross-Cultural trainer, translator, and taught English for Speakers of Other Languages.

I received my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Oregon in 1977. Afterwards, I taught English in the Peace Corps in Tunisia and then went to Alaska for 20 years. Then I went back into the Peace Corps, this time to the Philippines to train English teachers. I have worked at the DLI for almost three years teaching grammar essentials, study skills and area studies.

Richard Donovan

Richard Donovan is a member of the DigitalStream Conference Organizing
Committee and currently serves as Manager, Extended Education and International
Programs at CSU Monterey Bay. Since 1996, he has helped CSU Monterey
Bay to develop regional public/private collaborative projects and a number
of innovative partnerships to promote second language acquisition, assessment
and teaching. A former Foreign Area Officer with the Department of Defense,
Mr. Donovan holds a Master's degree in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton
University. Prior to his working at CSU Monterey Bay, he served as founding

Tarek Elgendy

M.A. in Public Administration from the American University in Cairo. Taught EFL at the Egyptian DLI for 20 years before joining DLI California. Taught Arabic at Middle East School I for a year before being chosen to join Curriculum Development Division to take part in developing a new Arabic Basic Course. Expert in using SMART Board and conducted many workshops to MEI faculty. Co-presented workshops on the uses of SMART Board 2003-2004. Co-presented a workshop on ‘SMART Board Technology Enhances Methodology’ and a presentation on ‘Developing Communicative Tasks for Use with SMART Board’ at the Digital Stream Conference in 2004.
Jong Oh Eun

Jong Oh Eun received his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University. His recent co-authored articles on Korean speech level have been published in Language Sciences and Linguistics. He is interested in discourse analytic approaches to grammar and material development using the media resources. Teresa Fernandez-Ulloa

Jack Franke

Jack Franke is Professor of Russian at the Russian Language School, Defense Language Institute (DLI), Monterey, CA. He previously served in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany as the Director of Computer-Aided Language Instruction. He is a SMART Board Exemplary Educator and is presently using iPods to enhance L2 speaking proficiency. Franke has presented at national and international conferences, and presently is on the Editorial Board of the CALICO journal. Luba Grant

Luba Grant is currently the Dean of Asian School I, which provides language and area studies instruction in Chinese Mandarin, Japanese, Thai, and Tagalog at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). A graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, she has held numerous leadership positions at DLI including: Dean of Middle East School II (Arabic and Persian-Farsi), Dean - Russian School II and later the School of Russian Studies. Dean Grant currently serves as a reviewer for Dialog on Language Instruction and is a board member of ACTFL 's Less Commonly Taught Languages Special Interest Group (LCTL SIG). She has a strong interest in computer assisted and Web-based instruction and together with representatives from the Naval Postgraduate Modeling Virtual Environments and Simulation Institute has led the development and evaluation efforts of the Arabic language and culture training program that incorporates computer-generated Avatars in a virtual environment.

Cara Nicole Greene

Cara Greene is a Ph.D. research student in the National Centre for Language Technology (NCLT) at Dublin City University (DCU). Her research interests include Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Information, Communication Technology (ICT) in education, special education, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and dyslexia. Her postgraduate research at the School of Computing in DCU focuses on the use of CALL to cater to the specific needs of teenage students with dyslexia.

Hold a Ph.D. and MA in philology from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of the University of Warsaw, and MATFL from the MIIS. Taught English at the University of Warsaw before coming to the DLI. At the DLI, worked first as a Polish Department teacher and supervisor, then as Faculty and Staff Development Division specialist, German coordinator and test writer at the Testing Division, and Russian Department teacher and team leader. Currently serve as a Russian curriculum development specialist at the Curriculum Division. During my work at the DLI, served on numerous boards and committees, such as the Merit Pay Boards, Accreditation Subcommittee, Quality Review Committee, and FPDD Proposal Board Committee. Served as DLI Academic Advisory Council Vice-Chair and European School Faculty Advisory Committee Chair. Received Public Service Employee of the Year and DLI Civilian Instructor of the Year Awards. Awarded professor is rank. Frequently gave presentations at conferences and have publications in professional journals.

Kawther Hakim
Kawther Hakim is currently an Associate Professor at the Continuing Education- Distance Learning Division at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). Hussny Ibrahim

Currently serve as a department chairperson in Middle East school II at Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. Played a key role in developing DLPT5, which is a test used in assessing the foreign language proficiency level of US government personnel. Serving as the Target Language Expert in the Machine Translation Project, a joint project between DLI and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, provided language analysis to Arabic reading texts. Within the framework of Qatar Education Reform Initiative, worked with McGraw Hill Company as an Arabic Language Expert and the head of the Arabic review team. Authored and delivered several presentations on teaching and testing MSA and Arabic dialects [i.e. UCLA, Georgetown University and DLIFLC]. Christopher Jones

Sahie Kang

Dr. Sahie Kang is a Professor and Dean of Middle East School II at Defense Language Institute. Before she took over the Deanship three years ago, she served as a chairperson in a Korean Department in Asian School III, as a Test Developer in Evaluation and Standardization Division, as a Curriculum Developer in Curriculum Division, and still serves as an OPI tester at DLI. She has given numerous presentations in National Conferences of ACTFL, AATK, NCOLCTL, and LSA and published many articles on Foreign Language Teaching/Learning and Linguistics. As an ACTFL OPI trainer and a DLI OPI Master Tester, she also participated in Korean Flagship Program at University of Hawaii and University of California at Los Angeles by training their teaching staff with Proficiency Level Guidelines and ACTFL OPI training. She currently serves as a Vice President of International Association of Korean Language Education that has over 1000 membership worldwide.

Heidi Kent

Heidi Brumbaugh Kent is an ESL/literacy tutor and self-taught web programmer. She has a bachelor's degree in Russian Language, and is planning to enroll in Graduate School in the fall with an emphasis in applied linguistics. She developed Personal Educational Press as a tool to help teach her children how to read, and has expanded it over the years to be a generalized educational tool. Heidi also moderates a fiction writing group, and is an active member of the Santa Cruz Literacy Program Steering Committee, where her contributions emphasize technology.

Hanan Khaled

B.A. in Pharmacy from the University of Alexandria, Egypt. Taught Arabic at Middle East School I for a year before being chosen to join Curriculum Development Division to take part in developing a new Arabic Basic Course. Taught French in a private school for 3 years and science for 8 years. Taught pharmaceutical science at Western Career College for 2 years in the United States. Developed a Matrix for Pharmaceutical Mathematics for a 60 week course and a Pharmacy Technician Board end-of-course test. In 2004, during the Digital Stream 2004 conference, co-presented ‘SMART Board Technology Enhances Methodology’ and ‘Developing Communicative Tasks for Use with the SMART Board.’
Masato Kikuchi
Masato Kikuchi (Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh) is Associate Professor of Japanese at Georgia Institute of Technology. His Ph.D. research focused on the areas of application of natural language processing techniques such as development and evaluation of intelligent computer-assisted language instruction, discourse/pragmatics processing, and psycholinguistics. He was the Assistant Director of a research project which developed Macintosh-based computer programs called "Understanding Written Japanese" at the University of Pittsburgh. He has completed a two-year online language course sequence in Japanese for the University System Georgia and made presentations and workshops in regional and national conferences (CALICO, FLEAT-5, SEATJ, etc.). He is currently a co-director of summer, intensive study abroad program (Language for Business and Technology) and working on the project involving translation of technical and business documents.
Dr. Dohee Koo

I majored in Korean linguistics at Yonsei University in Korea, and received
a doctorate in foreign language education at Ohio State University. I taught
Korean for more than 10 years both in Korea and in the U.S. My students were
college students and adult learners mostly from Japan and the U.S. My
current interest in foreign language teaching is increasing awareness of
lexical phrases among teachers and learners, promoting learner autonomy,
developing pragmatic and cultural competence in learners, designing
contextualized and simulated classroom tasks, and using authentic materials
and media in teaching.

Irene Krasner (MIIS, MATFL 2000) is the Academic Specialist for the European and Latin American School at the Defense Language Institute. She has presented previously at conferences on the role of culture in language teaching and second language acquisition.
Ganna Kudyma

Dr. Ganna Kudyma is a lecturer in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at UCLA and serves as the Program Coordinator for the First Year Russian Program. Ganna has taught Russian and Ukrainian at all levels, from elementary to heritage. She also teaches various cultural courses at UCLA.

Gus Leonard

Gus Leonard is the Language Lab Coordinator at California State University,
Monterey Bay (CSUMB). He also serves as President of the SouthWest
Association for Language Learning Technology (SWALLT). Leonard has
worked with language learning and technology since 1991 and came to
CSUMB in 2000 from the University of Minnesota CLA Language Center.
His training as an instructor of Swedish and English as a Second Language
has brought him into classrooms from the primary grades through college
and adult education programs both in the United States and Japan. He
currently consults with various regional institutions and continues
his work as a founding participant in the CSU-Sanako Virtual Language
Learning project.

Patrick Lin

Presently an Associate Professor and Chairperson of Chinese Department B at the Defense Language Institute. Received his Master's Degree in Modern Chinese Language from Jinan University of China in 1987. He has been a professional Chinese language teacher and researcher in Mainland China, Macao, Hong Kong and the US for more then 22 years. His publications include Shiqi Dialect (Jinan University Press, China, 1987), A Survey of Dialects in the Pearl River Delta, Vol. 1, 2, 3(co-author, New Century Publishing House, Hong Kong, 1987-1990), 500 Basic Chinese Characters (co-author, Sinolingua, Beijing, First Edition1996, Second Edition 1999), Facts About China (co-author, New England Publishing Associates, US. 2003), and over thirty papers on Chinese language teaching and research. Natalie Lovick

Dr. Franco Paoletti is an ESL Science and Chemistry high school teacher. He holds a PhD in Physics from líUniversitaí di Roma (Italy) an M.S. in Management from Thomas Edison State College and a Technical Diploma from Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo (Spain). He has teaching certifications in science, mathematics and elementary. He is currently obtaining certifications in Italian and bilingual education. He has been a speaker and contributor to 80+ national and international conferences and author and co-author of 45+ technical peer-reviewed papers.

Received her M.A. in philology, Moscow State University; Ph.D. in international policy studies from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Serves as Coordinator of Media Development and Technology Training and is also an Spanish instructor at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, IL. She is currently pursuring a doctorate of education at Pepperdine University. She has presented at various conferences nationally about best practices for integrating technology into the curriculum. She has designed and developed two online Spanish courses and works with faculty in developing technology-based materials and conducts workshops throughout the year.

Associate Professor of the Institute for World Languages and Cultures at California State University, Monterey Bay. She directs the Japanese language and area studies programs and offers first, third and fourth year Japanese language courses. Dr. Saito brings pedagogical expertise and her rich experience in designing technology enhanced, proficiency-oriented curricula and language programs. She won national recognition for developing an innovative Professional Development / Credentialing Model for in-service teachers in the state of Texas. She is currently site-director of the Monterey Bay Foreign Language Project, Dr. Saito has wide rage of research activities. She has published articles in the areas of reading comprehension, teacher education, Business Japanese, and computer assisted language instruction and has delivered numerous papers at learned societies. Her recent publications on second language acquisition and Japanese language pedagogy are found in Journals such as The Modern Language Journal, Foreign Language Annals, CALICO Journal, The Journal for Language for International Business. She has also published textbooks and Japanese language teaching computer assisted language-learning programs. She conducts numerous workshops on professional development. Peter Silzer

Dr. Peter Silzer has spent over 30 years in linguistic research and teaching. From 1975-1992 he lived in Indonesia and learned Bahasa Indonesia, as well as one of the minority languages. From 1992-2005 he taught a variety of linguistic and translation-related courses as an Associate Professor at Biola University in La Mirada, CA. In May 2005 he was hired by the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, CA as a teacher of Indonesian. In this capacity he has researched available on-line materials in Indonesian language study and has found a wealth of ideas and materials.

Francoise Sorgen-Goldschmidt

Laurette Suter

Prof Suter has a strong background in both technology and language acquisition, working 20 years at the CSU Sacramento Media Services Department where she headed audio/visual/media services for faculty, combined with extensive training in computer programming, and teaching French and English at various levels. Currently she is the CSUS Language Lab Director & French faculty member. She uses technology in all her courses, and as a member of the CSU Virtual Language Lab (VLL) consortium, developed the first online Beginning French course, offered to the entire CSU system for Fall 2005-Spring 2006. Her philosophy in learning is that it needs to be fun, with an emphasis on building student confidence in speaking French.

Richard Sutton

Richard C. Sutton is Director of International Programs and Senior Advisor for Academic Affairs at the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. He has held academic affairs positions with the Iowa Board of Regents and the University of Wisconsin System Administration prior to joining the University System of Georgia in 1998. He was director of international education at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from 1984 to 1995, where he also was a faculty member in foreign languages and international studies. A Russian historian by training, he earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University and his A.B. from Duke University. He is the principal investigator for USG's NSEP grant to develop and teach on-line courses in less commonly taught languages.

Katherine Watson

Dr. Katherine Watson has been teaching French, English, linguistics, anthropology, and English as a Second language for nearly four decades, at first in the traditional classroom, later at a distance, and more recently online. Named as a co-developer and -instructor for the Annenberg/CPB (Corp. for Public Broadcasting)Project's first foray into online learning, "French in Action Online", she was also the first to launch a fully online course in the Coast Community College District. The latter, "French Topics", retains some of the same students who entered it initially in 1993. Dr. Watson has published papers on language learning and online education in Syllabus Press, Selected Papers from the International Conference on Teaching and Learning, and T-CON, among others. She has been a regular presenter at TechED, the League for Innovation, and the International Conference on Teaching and Learning.
