Biographical Notes

Wen-chiu Tu is a tenured Assistant Professor of Technology Integration at the Defense Language Institute. She has designed Listening and Reading CD software and is currently producing Chinese Orthography on the Web.

Before joining DLI, Dr. Tu taught Chinese language at CSU Hayward from 1994 to 1997 where she developed an on-line course . She organized the Internet Workshop for the Chinese Language Teachers Association of California in 1997 and was the Chinese team leader of Bay Area Foreign Language Program at Stanford University.

She received a Ph.D. in linguistics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1994, where she developed HyperCard courseware: "Pinyin Pronunciation Tutor" and gained hands-on experience in computational linguistics.

Abstract
This session links web-delivered instruction with proficiency-oriented teaching. Examples of collaborative activities among peers, application of Harmer’s teaching model to CALL tasks and ways of enhancing speaking via synchronous online conferencing will be presented. Major features to be demonstrated include multilingual input method editors of Internet Explorer 5.0, interactive Shockwave movies with staggered feedback, and streaming vide/audio
